3.3 MHz High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound Transducer for Acousto-Optic Lensing and Therapeutic Applications

The HIFU-3.3 is a custom high-intensity focused ultrasound transducer engineered for dual-mode operation combining collinear acousto-optic lensing with therapeutic ultrasound capabilities. This 3.3 MHz, PZT-8 single-element transducer generates a spherically confined acoustic focal zone that induces a 3D-variable refractive index profile for dynamic optical focusing, while delivering focused ultrasound intensities suitable for therapeutic applications. When aligned co- or counter-propagating with a laser beam, it produces a true single-point optical focus with instantaneous extended depth of field without mechanical scanning. With focal zone dimensions of approximately 10 mm axial and 10 mm lateral, this device bridges the gap between advanced photonic manipulation and high-intensity focused ultrasound therapy. Medical applications include non-invasive tumor ablation, targeted drug delivery, blood-brain barrier opening for neurological disorders, and ultrasound-mediated gene therapy. The system also shows promise for ophthalmic treatments, neuromodulation, and thermal therapy for cancer and benign tumors.
